State Online Colleges Methodology
State Eligibility Requirements:
- Have a campus location within the state that is considered to be a "main campus" as classified by College Scorecard.
- Offer five or more fully online bachelor's degrees.
Community College by State Eligibility Requirements:
- Offer primarily associate and certificates degrees based on data from the National Center for Education Statistics.
- Have a campus location within the state that is considered to be a "main campus" as classified by College Scorecard.
- Offer five or more fully online associate degrees.
About the Data
Online Enrollment
Colleges are presented in order of highest to lowest online enrollment. This data point represents the total number of undergraduate students enrolled exclusively in distance education courses. This data is directly from the National Center for Education Statistics.
Manually Collected Degrees
Online degrees are collected by hiring contractors to manually research and collect the appropriate online degrees.
Fully online status: Programs that require some on-campus coursework were still considered for our rankings if the amount of in-person work required was limited to two weeks or less per year, allowing students to work around job or other responsibilities.
